Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Champions Gor Mahia retained the Super Cup after edging perennial rivals AFC Leopards 1-0 in a match played on Sunday 28th January at the Afraha Stadium, Nakuru.
Gor, who also won the title last year, seemed the better side from the onset although th thwo sides took time to settle down.
Wellington Ochieng was the recipient of Gor’s first attack but after beating Moses Mburu, he softly lost the ball to Salim Abdallah. Gor deployed several other attacks but Leopards keeper Gabriel Andika kept his side in the game with brilliant saves.
Boniface Oluoch was called into action for the first time on 26 minutes by Akroh Prince who unleashed a promising shot that unfortunately went over the bar.
Jacques Tuyisenge and Godfrey Walusimbi then paired up shortly after with a clinical exchange but as the latter was preparing to cross the ball to George `Blackberry’ Odhiambo, Mburu moved in quickly to clear the ball out of danger.
Gor would however have a successful attack in the 40th minute, George Odhiambo floating in an inviting cross that was headed home by new skipper Harun Shakava. Shakava was handed the leadership mantle following the deature of long serving captain Musa Mohammed to Albanian side FK Tirana.
Both sides made early changes after the restart as Ingwe introduced Brian Marita and Henry Uche while KÓgalo brought in Kevin Omondi and Ephriam Guikan for Odhiambo and Meddie Kagere.
He final half was a more balanced affair as the leaders sought to control the game in a bid to maintain their lead while Ingwe were on the hunt for an equalizer.
Francis Kahata squandered the last chance for Gor late in the game while Bake Lukooya was guilty of the same offense in the opposite end as the match ended 1-0 in favour of Gor Mahia FC.
The victory sees Gor lift the Super Cup trophy for a record fifth time following similar triumphs in 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2017.
