The Kenya Hockey Union(KHU) has accepted an invitation from the International Hockey Federation(FIH) to participate in this year’s Olympics Day. KHU shall hold its celebrations on 23rd and 24th of June 2018.
Every year, on 23 June, Olympic Day is celebrated all around the world to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on 23 June 1894: hundreds of thousands of people – young and old – participate in sports events, exhibitions, music and educational seminars. The activities on Olympic Day are mostly coordinated by the more than 200 National Olympic Committees (NOCs). The goal is to promote participation in sport regardless of age, gender or athletic ability and to get as many people as possible active.
KHU Targets to have sporting activities in hockey across all counties in Kenya that are currently active in Hockey Namely; Nairobi (City park), Mombasa, Kisumu, Kakamega, Nakuru and Bungoma while Kiambu & Nyeri counties are tentatively expected join in at Nairobi.
The Union has put in place plans that will start with Hockey Clinics at 8.am on the 23rd of June followed by a Hockey 5’s tournament for mixed team and all ages from 1pm on the same day. The tournament is expected to continue up until 1 pm of the 24th June. The KHU Olympic Day celebrations will culminate in a small ceremony of recognition and appreciation of Kenya’s Hockey Ex-Olympians
Currently in the process of identifying the celebration Coordinators in various counties, KHU has called upon Counties keen on hosting the events to strictly adhere to the standards and award criteria that will be provided.
In 2017, FIH and NAs re-joined Olympic Day and organised various hockey programmes in more than 50 countries across all continents. The FIH 2017 Olympic Day Awards went to Uruguay (2,000 CHF) and Myanmar (1,000 CHF).
