Daniel “Alves” Otieno; Gor Under 19 Prodigy

Regardless of what is happening in our football, one thing that will never lack is talent, especially the raw uncut diamonds.

Regardless of what is happening in our football, one thing that will never lack is talent, especially the raw uncut diamonds.

Gor Mahia U-19 team which features in the Nairobi County League has been in the headlines recently. I decided to go check them out this last Saturday as they welcomed Mbotela Kamaliza to their Makongeni Grounds home ground.

Gor Mahia won the match 2-0, where Daniel Otieno scored the second goal through a well taken penalty that left the experienced Kamaliza custodian flat footed. Nick named Alvez after Brazilian and Barcelona right back by his friends; his runs, passes and touches on the ball are out of his age and experience. I caught up with the sixteen year old Kamkunji High School student after the match to get to know more about him.

The Kawangwere born striker went to Lavington Primary School before joining the fading football powerhouse Kamkunji High School. He helped his school to reach the quarter finals of Metropolitan Region Games last year. He hopes they will perform better this year and reach the nationals in August.

He admires FC Sofapaka forward Enock Agwanda and FC Barcelona’s star Lionel Messi. He is happy with the opportunity to play competitive matches with Gor Mahia junior side and cannot wait to wear the green Gor Mahia jersey. If he will not be able to join Gor he will be at home at Tusker FC as well.

He is thankful to his father for the support and his games master at Kamkunji Mr. Ngari. He has kind words for his coach Mr. Seleh who he says has been instrumental in improving his game this far.

Then the challenges of playing in a non-professional league come in. They do not have the luxury of a salary or facilities that KPL teams have but they are grateful to Gor Mahia fans for the support. He acknowledges they are better than other clubs in the league but more can still be done.

The soft spoken Daniel likes to eat fish and ugali. The left footed forward is a joy to watch and if what I saw is anything to go by, he will soon break into the top flight league. Twelve goals from seven matches to his credit is proof of his great potential.

Kenyanstar wishes the future star all the best.
