Upper Hill are the champions of this year’s National Secondary School Ball Games in boys’ football category. This is after a 3-1 win over St Anthony’s on post-match penalties on Saturday July 8, 2017 at the Nyeri Primary Complex. The two sides went to penalties after the regular time ended in a 1-1 draw.
St Anthony’s dominated the opening minutes of the match, pressing Upper Hill hard in search of a goal. Their hard work paid off in the 35th minute, Kazungu Mohammed’s shot going to the top left corner after captain Mayaka had fed him with a quickly taken free kick. A shirtless celebration landed Mohammed into the referee’s book.
In the second half, Upper Hill who eliminated favorites Kakamega High School in the semifinals of the competition came back stronger and started dominating the midfield.
Substitute Shaban Mwachozi finally leveled the scores in the 74th minute, getting past a mistimed tackle to find the back of the net. St Anthony’s scorer Kazungu Mohammed was then showed a red card for a second bookable offense and his side had to play the rest of the match with ten men on the pitch. They however managed to hold on to the draw till the final whistle. It is Upper Hill who had the last laugh, winning the penalties 3-1 to be crowned this year’s champions.
