Despite recently losing two key players, Ulinzi Stars have stepped up preparation for the 2018 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) season and are confident of clinching silverware this campaign.
The soldiers witnessed the departure of forwards Stephen Waruru and Samwel Onyango, who joined Sofapaka and Gor Mahia FC respectively. The two were the most influential for the military side on their route to a seventh place finish but were quickly snapped up by rivals.
Ulinzi have however beefed up the squad with six new arrivals who are all young and ready for the big stage. Michael Kahindi, a striker, joins the defending trio Boniface Andayi, Milton Wafula and Oscar Njika as players who were scouted from the CDF games and signed to the team.
George Omondi is also a defender who was engaged from Liberty Sports Academy, same to striker Masita Masuta who ditched Nzoia United for the Soldiers. Masuta managed six goals and eleven assists while with Nzoia last season.
The new signings have earned the praise of head coach Dunstan Nyaundo, who believes that they will make a significant impact with a bit of training.
“Basically this is the same team that has been there before, apart from the fact that we lost a few players after last season,’’ said Nyaundo.
“All the same, we have recruited some very good young players, some of which are ready for the league and others whom we are molding but in a nutshell I think we are ready as we gear towards the season, hoping for a positive impact in the team.”
On his part, club chairman Lt Col Erick Oloo reckons that the coach has prepared the team well during the pre-season and tipped Ulinzi to compete for silverware in 2018.
“Last year we did not do well like we had expected but we have done well in terms of recruitment so whatever gaps that were there are sealed to see that we win silverware this year and the new players we have brought in have the capability and capacity to do the job,” said Oloo.
“The coach has worked on the team well in preseason and though we still have some work to do before the season kicks in, I’m confident we will be ready and we will get off to a good start,” he added.
