Defending champions Kakamega High school displayed their prowess at the finals of this year’s Rugby 15s National School games to retain their title with a deserved win against Laiser Hill.
Kakamega High announced their intentions right on the fifth minute of the match when When Derrick Ashiundu converted a penalty kick to make it 3 nil.
11 minutes later Kakamega high school scored a try which Ashiundu converted again to make it 10 nil. At this point Laiser lost a player through suspension . Kakamega took advantage of this to score yet another try and push the scores to 15 nil in the 24th minute.
Laiser mounted pressure and it paid off in the 27th minute when Bruce Abinta scored a try and Johnstone Olindi converted it to make the scores 7-15 at the close of the first half.
On resumption, the onus was on Laiser Hill who playing catch up. They mounted enough pressure and scored a try which Olindi converted to make the scores 14-15.
However with 5 minutes of play remaining Kakamega High School who had done a good job of soaking the pressure won a penalty which Ashiundu converted to make the score 14-18, also the final score of the game.
The win was sweet revenge for Kakamega who had lost out to Laiser Hill in an emotionally charged match during the group stages of the competition.
