Real Madrid are out of the Cop del Rey after a shock 2-1 defeat loss to Leganes in the second leg of the quarterfinals played on Wednesday night at the Bernabeu.
Having a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, Zinedene Zidane opted to rest the likes of Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo not knowing what was ahead.
Leganes took the lead on 32 minutes through Javier Eraso with a long range effort that could not be kept out by keeper Kiko Cassila.
Out of favor forward Karim Benzema then drew Madrid level two minutes into the second half with a simple pass from Lucas Vazquez to revive the hosts’ hope of progressing to the semis.
Los Blancos’ hopes were however shattered by Gabriel Pires, who raised above Theo Hernandez to head home the winning goal shortly after.
In frantic efforts to find an equalizer, Real threw all men forward but were unable to find a goal hence crashing out of the tournament in a forgettable night. Leganes who are currently 13th in LaLiga standings progress on away goals following a 2-2 aggregate score.
The cup exit is a huge blow to manager Zidane, whose time at the Bernabeu seems to be coming to an end following poor results.
Madrid are 19 points off the pace in La Liga and now have only the Champions League to play for. They are also not assured of progress in the Champions League as they face a tough Paris Saint Germain side in two weeks time.
