Defending champions Kenya Police and Kenya Defense Forces KDF team collected 13 points apiece in the national boxing league first leg that served off at Modern Fitness Gym in Mombasa at the weekend.

The reigning champions kicked off on high bagging two victories on the rebound thanks to Peter Kiarie and Morris Ochieng who downed Mohamed Hussein of OKSA and Coast’s Joshua Musyoki in the finals of light-flyweight and flyweight contests respectively.

KDF’s duo Isaac Meja and Edwin Okongo ensured the soldiers match their counterparts with wins against OKSA’s Richard Ogolla and Chris Orengo of Coast in the bantamweight and middleweight finals respectively.

Surprised package Omar Kasongo Sports Academy (OKSA) finished third on nine points, one better than fourth placed Kenya Prisons, while Coast Combined and Kantrack were joint fifth with seven points each.

Little known Thika amassed four points settling for seventh position, followed by minnows Kenya National Hospital and Kibera who collected two points each. Ndenderu and Nairobi had a point each, while Tommy G finished rock bottom.

The Ksh. 20 million Sportpesa sponsored league will head to Kisumu next month for second leg before moving to Nakuru, Thika, Machakos and Nairobi.
