The 24 Years Old Wicket Keeper Irfan Karim has expressed confidence that the Kenya National Cricket team will qualify for the 2019 ICC Cricket world cup that will be hosted by England and Wales. This is in spite of the International  Cricket Council cutting down the number of participating teams from 14 to 10.

“Our main Goal is to qualify for the 2019 World Cup. It is of course more difficult because ICC has cut down the number of participating teams from 14 to 10 but nothing is impossible.” He said.

“I believe there is sufficient talent and quality in the team and it is now just to the players and how hard we train and how disciplined we are” He added.

Irfan Karim spoke to Kenyanstar in an exclusive Interview for the Kenyanstar of the week column

The 2019 World Cup will feature 10 teams, a decrease from previous World Cups in 2011 and 2015 which featured 14 teams. The hosts England, and the top seven other teams in the ICC rankings (comprising the ten full members and two associate members), as of 30 September 2017, will earn automatic qualification with the remaining two spots being decided by the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Bangladesh.

This means that ICC Associate and Affiliate members, which had previously been guaranteed four spots through the Qualifier, can be represented by at most two teams and possibly none at all if they are beaten by Full Members in the Qualifier. This also means that at least 2 Test playing nations will play in the qualifying tournament and therefore a Test nation could miss the World Cup for the first time. The format for the tournament will have just one group so each team will play 9 group games before 2 semi finals and a final.

The odds seemed to be stuck against countries like Kenya but with the spirit shown by Karim, it could be the best place to launch a surpirise from. There is time to make this happen.
