Despite putting in a five-star display against Dijon on Wednesday night, Neymar was still the recipient of boos from the club supporters after denying Edinson Cavani the chance to become Paris Saint-Germain’s all-time top scorer.
The former Barcelona forward scored four times and provided two assists as PSG thumped Dijon 8-0. His illustrious contribution was however not sufficient to wade off fierce boos from home supporters in the 82nd minute when he refused to allow Edinson Cavani to take a penalty.
Cavani had earlier scored a goal that drew level with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 156-goal record tally for the club and had he taken the penalty, the Uruguayan would have become the all-time record scorer.
Neymar however stood up to take the penalty, a move that irked many fans at the Parc des Princes who chanted ‘Cavani, Cavani’ as he took the spot kick.
Speaking after the match, PSG manager Unai Emery played down the incident insisting that all stats are destined to help the whole team.
“Cavani, he is our goalscorer, he improved a lot, his individual statistics help the team and the team help him get his goals,” Emery said.
“Neymar hit the penalty kick and he [Cavani] will have other chances to score more goals. The team is better with Neymar. All wins and stats are made to benefit the whole team.”
The win takes PSG eleven points clear at the top of Ligue 1
