The 2018 Hayer One Star Field Youth League Cricket tournament took place this ended weekend. The tournament ran from 22nd-25th August 2018 at the Nairobi Gymkhana and Premier Cricket Club, with 36 teams from around East Africa taking part.
Speaking to KS, the event organizer and Star Field Sports Ltd director Veer Davesaid that the purpose of organizing the event is to create a mass audience for the sport and give underprivileged kids a chance to participate in the sport. A remarkable number of over 130 underprivileged children out of 500 took part in the tournament without a requirement of paying participation fees. This is the second tournament by the organization, the first one was, “The Numi One Cricket Challenge.”
Debutants Northern Tanzania Athletes Association (NTAA) teamsfrom Arusha,were the underdogs coming into the tournament. Despite this, they ended up stealing hearts with theirperformances that saw their u9 team win their age grade with two runs against Pumwani from Nairobi. Mombasa Simba Academy managed to win both the U13 and U15 categories while Uganda National U19 team won the senior most category.
“The main challenge in hosting this tournament was on the logistical part, ensuring that the teams and the uniforms which we sourced from India arrived in time. Preparations on the grounds among a host of logistical issues involving such a tournament. The positives picked from this tournament is that the tournament had a big number of participants and there is a growth opportunity,” said Mr Dave.
The focus of the organizers is Mr Dave said is now on taking the tournament international by inviting more teams from India and South Africa while increasing the number of participants from the region.
