Kenya Rugby Union aspirant for the Chairman's position, Mr. Sasha Mutai, has told Kenyanstar that he is running on a development platform and believes that his previous track record as a director and vice chairman will be sufficient for delegates to elect him.
Speaking this morning to Kenyanstar on phone, Mr. Mutai, who served as the union Vice Chairman between 2010 and 2014, has accused the incumbent, Richard Omwela, for being aloof and ignoring the plight of Championship and Nationwide clubs.
"Of course he found a bigger mess and he has created some stability. Stability is good but we need development, We need to move forward. We have not had progress for the last two years" Said Mr. Mutai. "Our Rugby needs a chairman who is hands on and not one who is in his comfort zone" He added
Mr. Mutai accused the previous regimes of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds. "When I was running the Safari Sevens, It was a profitable venture, It generated revenue that would be shared by clubs but now it is on its death bed" he said. "Tournaments like the Super Series are dead and sponsors shunned rugby. So far, only Safaricom has come back but people like Bamburi are not on board" He added. "We have seen KRU directors go on expensive foreign trips at the Unions expense while Clubs are suffering back at home" Said Mr. Mutai. "These funds are meant to develop Rugby, not for leisure" He added.
Mr. Mutai has also accused the current office for poor handling of the National teams. "There is a lot of instability in the technical bench for our Sevens team. They cannot perform under such conditions. Some of them were subjected to non contractual dismissal, they went to court and won so the union has to pay them" Noted Mr. Mutai. "This is a waste of the Union's resources, and lord knows how many more court cases we are facing" he added. "We need to give more support for Kenya Sevens, How is it possible that you have been a chairman for two years and during this period you have only met the technical bench members only once?" Posed Mutai.
On infrastructure, Mr. Mutai said he planned to put up a high performance Rugby Stadium at the Kasarani Complex. "Every sports association was allocated space at Kasarani so it's time we made use of our space for what it was intended." He said. "And It is not only at Kasarani, my plan is to engage most if not all governors and work with them to put up Rugby facilities in their counties" He added.
Mr. Mutai promised to address the plight of Championship and Nationwide clubs who in his opinion had been ignored. "Unlike Kenya Cup Clubs, Championship clubs have to do a lot of travelling across counties. Unfortunately no consideration is being made for these clubs, So much effort has been directed at Kenya Cup clubs" He said. "These issues have to be addressed if we are to realize our dream of great performance by our National teams including qualification for the 2019 world cup. And i believe I'm the man to address them" He concluded.
Alexander Sasha Mutai will face off against Rajinder Sembi and incumbent Mr. Richard Omwela in a three man race for the Chairman's position. The elections are confirmed for the 22nd of March 2017.
In a previous Interview with Kenyanstar, the Incumbent Richard Omwela had confirmed his candidature but stated he would not campaign and instead would allow the clubs judge him on his performance.
