Vet Lab Sports Club’s Mike Kisia recovered from a double bogey with two holes to go, to build a narrow one shot lead during the opening round of the 54-hole Sigona Bowl golf championship at the par 72 Sigona Golf Club course on Saturday. Kisia took off well enroute to a level par front nine that included a birdie at the par five-fourth hole before dropping a shot at the seventh hole.
He set off for the back nine with a birdie at the par five-10th and appeared set for an under par closing nine as he picked his second birdie at the 12th. He, however, went back to level par after two back-to-back bogeys from the 13th. As if that was not enough, Kisia picked up a six at the par four 16th though he managed to recover one at the 17th to finish the morning first round on one over par 73. This gave him a narrow lead from Golf Park’s Anthony Kinuthia and Royal Nairobi’s Kenneth Bollo who fired two over par 74 each.
Three others tied on three over par 75 each in the event which had to be stopped for some times because of rain. Those who tied on 75 included local boy Mohit Mediratta, Royal Nairobi’s Jay Sandhu and Vet Lab’s Edwin Mudanyi. Royal Nairobi’s Dennis Saikwa was on his own with 76 while Muthaiga’s Jeff Kubwa led a group of six on 77.
The second round of the Kibo Sports Limited sponsored tournament was still taking place at the time of writing. This year the Sigona Bowl, which is marking its 57th year and is the first one in the 19-events Golfer of The Year series, has attracted a field of 98 players.
