Match Date: Nigeria v Kenya, 07 June 1997
The most eagerly waited match by Kenya as a country; if Stars could pull a surprise in Lagos then Stars would be near their dream of playing in their first ever World Cup and that would have been France 98.
The slogan adopted for the Lagos trip by fans was '' STARS GO FOR GOALS" and this initiative that was supported by Harambee Stars technical bench.
The government and the soccer federation by then KFF were not left behind promised the players goodies if they came back with a win from Lagos. The match commenced with high tempo with Super Eagles the home team with pressure to deliver since by then being regarded as the best team in Africa had triumphed in winning Olympics the year before shrugging off competition from the likes of Argentina and Brazil to win the gold medal.
Amazingly many fans expected the late Ken Simiyu,then at Nzoia Sugar to start the match but Reinhardt Fabisch had thought otherwise. Simiyu was the goal scorer in the first fixture against Nigeria in Nairobi which ended 1 - 1.
The Nigerians talent was evident on the pitch with the likes of Daniel Amokachi, Sunday Oliseh, Wilson Oruma, Augustine Okocha, Emmanuel Amunike just to mention a few. They overwhelmed Stars with their physical prowess and in the 13th minute the Super Eagles got an opener through a Sunday Oliseh strike.

Following the proceedings, Fabisch introduced Ken Simiyu in the 35th minute of the match. The Nigerians continued pressing Harambee Stars in their own half and using their strength on the flanks with the flashy speed of Emmanuel Amunike Super eagles got second goal in the 43rd minute Amunike.At halftime Stars were by two goals.
In the second half Nigerians picked from where they left, controling the midfield and attacking Kenya from flanks. Fabisch introduced Mike Muiruri for Eric Omondi in the 56th minute to put some punch in the attack. Soon after in the 61st minute Stars brought on Tom Ogweno for Vincent Kwarula to add an attacker to assist Ken Simiyu, Mike Okoth and Mike Muiruri.
Philip Troussier introduced Wilson Oruma who scored the third and final goal of the match in the 83rd minute to kill the Kenyan dream.The match ended 3 - 0 in favour of Super eagles.On that day, Stars hopes of qualifying for France 98 were extinguished.
