It is hard to believe that the country actually participated in the 1971 world cup where it emerged fourth.Since then the country has been on a downward trend thanks to the wrangles that hit the Kenya Hockey Union.
The recently concluded Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association games held at the Maseno School produced one of the most promising prospects in the game. Against all odds, Kang’aru Boy’s surprised many people when they displayed a fantastic game on their first appearance at the national level.
Samuel Mutito is one of the players who helped the team upset major schools in the championships.
The 17 year old started playing hockey in form one and has decided to take the game to the next level.
‘I like playing for glory and this is what I found out when I started playing hockey. I realized that this is a game of the humble and it is very unique.’
Mutito’s goal against Nyanza giants Orero turned the tables for the first timers. The School was trailing 3-0 with eight minutes to play. The hardworking Mutito picked the ball from his own half, made a surging run into Orero’s half before forcing a penalty corner. With perfect timing, the prodigy scored a fanastic volley for his side as they forced a 3-3 draw.
‘My coach always encourages us to fight up to the last minute. I never give up when playing. I believe that hardwork and determination pays and this is what has made me reach this level.’
Mutito attributes his success to his teammates. I cannot say that I am the best. We are one good team. Our training is very different and we work as a team in everything that we do.’
Just like other players who have had their hopes of playing hockey dashed, Mutito hopes that the Kenya Hockey Union will step up and tap talent from the grassroots if the game is to get national recognition.
‘At the moment, we have plenty of talent being wasted outside here. I really want to play hockey to the highest level but the opportunities are limited. If I get the best out the game, I will definitely play the game.’
The promising youngster wishes to ply his trade in major Hockey playing countries like Holland and with such a talent, he can make it.
