South Africa were crowned Champions of this year’s Mopani Copper Mines COSAFA Under-20 Championships after recording a 2-1 victory over Lesotho in a match played on Saturday December 15, 2017 at the Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

South Africa, who saw off Egypt 1-0 in the semis, needed only five minutes to take the lead through Lyle Foster’s well taken strike. The goal proved to be a double disadvantage to Lesotho as they lost first choice keeper Monaheng Ramalefane to injury and was replaced by Kopano.

Amajita would then continue dominating the match until the 40th minute when  Kamogelo Sambo reacted quickly to a goal-mouth scrum to bundle home their second of the day.

In the 64th minute, Lehlogonolo Matlou who had been on the pitch for just two minutes reduced the deficit for Lesotho with a stunning free kick from long range. His goal would however not inspire a complete comeback with the match ending 2-1 in favor of South Africa.

The title triumph is South Africa’s sixth in the competition and they join Zimbabwe, who also have six  under their belt. Lesotho were meanwhile on the losing end for the third time after similar circumstances in 1990 and 2005.
