COSAFA U-20 Championships: Egypt Beat Uganda To Settle For Bronze

Egypt secured third place in the ongoing 2017 Mopani Copper Mines COSAFA Under-20 Championships after overcoming Uganda 3-1 in a third-place playoff match played on Saturday December 16, 2017 at the Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

Egypt secured third place in the ongoing 2017 Mopani Copper Mines COSAFA Under-20 Championships after overcoming Uganda 3-1 in a third-place playoff match played on Saturday December 16, 2017 at the Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

Egypt took the lead nineteen minutes into the match through Roshdi Ashraf, who swept a low shot past diving Uganda goalkeeper Eric Kibowa at the near post. Uganda’s Muhammad Shaban however made sure that the two sides go into the break tied 1-1 with his clinical header in the 44th minute.

In the second half, Uganda came back the better side with a series of attacks as they sought to lead the match for the first time but were dealt a blow at the half hour mark when Roshdi Ashraf scored his second of the day to make the scores 2-1. 

Abdelrahman Elrayash then sealed the 3-1 victory for Egypt with a killer goal in stoppage time, volleying from long range past keeper Eric Kibowa.

The North African country had failed to make it to the finals following a 1-0 loss to South Africa in the semis while Uganda were defeated 6-5 on penalties by Lesotho after a 0-0 draw at normal time.

Later in the day, the finals will see South Africa face Lesotho.
